I can’t believe tomorrow is May and I’ve still got flannel sheets on the bed and am wearing winter clothes!

Yesterday was busy. All my materials are prepped and packed for the conference. I had to run to Staples (again) in the middle of it for more ink. I’d just changed over the ink tanks yesterday, and I wasn’t printing THAT much! Something’s up with the Canon ink tanks for this printer. I used to be able to get 400 or more pages out of one ink tank. Yesterday, I BARELY got 200 pages. Also, the first time it beeps and says the ink is running out, I could override it and get an additional 50 pages out. Now, it’s only 10. It’s the same printer, the same paper — Canon downgraded the ink tanks. I do not appreciate that. I guess I’m doing printer research again. Plus, I want to get a new toner cartridge for my laser printer. Although it only prints B&W, it’s great for manuscripts.

Just shot a question over to the Cultural Council — although we have one more performance of SEAL TIDES, I’m prepping the reports for the Council and need to know if they want a copy of the final script.

Did laundry, baked the several dozen cupcakes for Welcome Spring, finished a draft of a client project and sent it out (took much longer than expected, but at least it’s out for notes), and worked on TRACKING MEDUSA edits. I’ve had a special place in my heart for this book since I wrote it, and I’m falling in love with the characters all over again — in spite of finding several places that need some serious work! 😉 I’m lucky to have such a good editor.

Prepped for today’s guest lecture. I have almost a full workday, and then I head off to the college. Then it’s time to frost cupcakes, work on edits, and pack clothes for the conference — I have all my materials, but I still have to wear something when I teach!

Having serious problems with my right hand and arm — tendon problems. Ouch! Will have to get a session with the acupuncturist.

Yesterday was tougher than it needed to be, because of corporate bullshit and greed. That’s all I’m going to say about it. It took up time that needed to be used for other things.

Managed to get about 60+ pages of TRACKING MEDUSA edited, and nearly finished a draft of a client project that will finally go out today, if everything continues to work.

Today, I want to get that client project out, do more work on the edits, and finish up the materials I’m taking to the conference. I’m also preparing the guest lecture I’m doing tomorrow at the Community College. I’m so tired that all I want to do is curl up and sleep, but that’s not until next week. I also have to bake three dozen cupcakes for Welcome Spring, which is on Thursday — I want to have enough time to bake and frost them.

There is plenty to be grateful for, and I’m trying to focus on that.

“Lake Justice” released! It’s available in digital format here. I’m excited about it, and about being part of the Amber Quill Press family! I hope you’ll buy it, read it, enjoy it!

Busy, busy, busy weekend. Worked at the library on Friday until 2; headed straight for the show. We had a small, but enthusiastic house, and the show went well. Came home, started cooking for Sunday.

Saturday morning, up early. Had to finalize a contract and get it into priority mail — of course, the printer ran out of the ink, and the business services place down the street is now closed on Saturdays, so I wound up making photocopies at Tedesechi, the local convenience store. But it’s signed, out, and should land on the producer’s desk today.

I go back into development for the Big Script Project today, and start delivering episodes next week.

Worked at the library for four hours, then headed to the grocery store to get the rest of the food for Sunday. Got some cooking done, headed for the show. Another small, but enthusiastic house on Saturday night. Surprising — we thought that would be a big house.

Sunday morning, up at 5, cooking. The edits for TRACKING MEDUSA landed in my in-box, so those get started today. Finished everything up to feed the company, loaded it into coolers, headed for the matinee. Matinee was fun –enthusiastic house. We had a nice dinner together, as a company, between shows, and my actors gave me a lovely gift from Flying Pig Pottery, one of my favorite local artists. Evening show was lively and our best yet. Nice way to end our ticketed run. Met a woman who runs an organization who’d like to commission me to write something specific to her organization’s mission. Looking forward to talking to her.

I was very lucky with this company of actors. They were a delight. There were definitely challenges around the production, but it was nice to know that I could trust my actors to show up, commit, and do the work, both in rehearsal and performance. And the production would not have happened without the above-and-beyond support of Kathy, Ann Marie, and Jim Zagzebski. Huge thanks to them!

There’s one more performance, on May 7 — I’m working with the understudy early this week, and then she has a put-in next Monday for Wednesday’s show.

Came home, exhausted. Unloaded the car, did the dishes, packed away the leftover food, packed the props the way I need them for this week’s rehearsals, put aside what has to be washed for next week’s performance. Dropping stuff into bins for the conference later this week. After spending so much time on the road, I thought I’d never want to see another hotel room again, and yet, at this point, I’m looking forward to it!

This week is busy — need to finish client projects, turn around the edits on TRACKING MEDUSA, develop the Big Script Project so I can start delivering episodes next week, print off the rest of the materials for the conference, guest lecture at the college, work at the library, bake for Welcome Spring!, help out on Welcome Spring!, work on the next set of contest entries, and teach at NECRWA.

Fri. April 25, 2014: An Interesting Start to the Day . . .

Well, THAT was an interesting way to start the day. The door in the bathroom jammed — doorknob wouldn’t turn. Tried to climb out the window, but couldn’t get it up high enough to slip through. Had to call the landlord just after 6 AM, so he could come over and hand me tools through the window so I could get out the hinges and take off the door. It was either that, or call the fire department!

We don’t call the landlord often, but, when we do, it’s something unique.

Yesterday was a good day at the library — put in my first video order; enormous sense of accomplishment. Worked on setting up some programs — getting excited about that aspect of the job.

Left at 2, headed over the bridge to the Marine Life Center. Again, the volunteers had turned around the room for me, which was a big help. The wonky light worked. We had a troop of girl scouts. The show itself was challenging — lines getting jumped, and then, instead of moving forward, actors trying to go back and getting even more tangled. The understudy was there trying to learn the show, and I had the actors run lines with her after the show, and after I gave notes. The audience still loved it, though, and I have to remind myself that they don’t know the show, and, as long as we got through it in a believable way, it works. It’s set up to be full of interruptions and tangents, that’s the structure, so there’s more room than if every line set up every other line and had to be letter-perfect.

Came home to work on client projects and some contract negotiations. I’m having a lot of trouble with tendons in my right arm and hand — will have to set up an appointment with the acupuncturist.

Late to bed, up early, wanting a productive morning on client projects, but then was stuck in the bathroom. It was pretty funny, but I lost time I desperately needed to work. Will have to make up for it tonight, in and around starting the food prep for Sunday. I’ll also be baking for the library’s big event next week — but I’ll probably do that Monday or Tuesday.

I’m at the library again, then head straight for the show, then home to get as much work done tonight as I can, before working at the library tomorrow and the heading to the show, finishing up the food, and two shows on Sunday.

That king-sized bed in the hotel room during the conference looks better to me every minute.

Oh, yeah, and “Lake Justice” is set to release on Sunday. I’ll let you know as soon as I have a buy link.

We had one heck of a storm blow through yesterday! All of a sudden, the sky got very dark. Thunder rumbled. Lightening flashed — and hail! Ping-pong ball sized, a couple of inches’ worth. We stood there, staring out at the storm roaring around us — and the power flickered.

Fortunately, I’d saved the large, complex document I was working on!

Anyway, time at the library was great. Lots of fun, got a lot of work done, I’m starting to learn the systems. I’ve joined the Association of Small and Rural Libraries, and I’m about to join both the Massachusetts and the American Library Associations. I’ve got ideas for programming (which I am taking over), and preparing my first book/video orders, some general orders and some to fulfill a grant we got. It’s all very exciting.

Dashed over to the Marine Life Center. They’d turned over the room from the morning programs, so set-up wasn’t too complicated. When the actors arrived, we set them up in the conference room and they ran lines, while I checked lights, sound, props, pre-set the programs, checked with front-of-house, etc.

We had a decent-sized crowd for opening, and they were very receptive. One little girl in the front row got really mad at all of the actor’s interruptions, until she realized it was part of the show! The friend of another actress couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t talk to her, when she entered in character with the audience! It was funny. There were a few line glitches, but everyone recovered, and they got a lot of applause. The programs contain packets with all kind of information that they can take with them and actually use, so it was all good. The audience really enjoys it, plus they’re getting actual information, and that’s the whole point.

Turned the room around for this morning’s programs, packed up, powered down, had the actors start signing programs, headed home. Got some work done, and then, by accident, came across the documentary SIX BY SONDHEIM, which just blew me away. I was lucky enough to meet him during the FOLLIES revival I worked on at the Belasco a few years back. He is truly one of the artistic treasures of our time.

Getting some work done this morning before I head in to the library (have to leave early and get gas on the way), then back over to the show. We have a troop of Girl Scouts booked this afternoon, so that should be enormous fun!

Wed. April 23, 2014: Opening Day for SEAL TIDES

Today is the opening day for SEAL TIDES at the National Marine Life Center. We’re running through Sunday in Buzzards Bay. It’s a family-friendly comic mystery that wraps education in entertainment!

Yesterday, I worked on client projects and materials for the workshop I’m teaching at the conference. I booked my hotel — landed a better room than I expected, so I’m pleased. It’s all paid for, and I have the confirmation, so all I have to do next Friday is show up. That’s the way I like it.

Finished building the prop for the show — it came out delightfully disgusting. Finished the program.

Went to the Marine Life Center in the early afternoon — the program was proofed, a few mistakes fixed, and then printed. I ran off copies for the run, folded them, and stuffed them with the stranding information, rack cards for NMLC, wish list, and Seafood Watch List. They get a lot of information when they come to the show! The stuffed programs were then counted out per show, rubber-banded, and put in the container, so we can just pull as we need them for every performance.

Got an apology from a client who was trying to renege on an agreement. It looks like we’ll be able to work things out. If we do, that means I’m booked through June. All my slots are full through May 8, but this project would take me through June, which would be nice.

Set up the costume area, the lighting/sound designer went over the board (since I have to run the board, too), and we had our final dress/tech. It had its ups and downs, but it was solid enough that I feel good about the opening.

Packed up, put away the props (I’m leaving everything at the Center instead of hauling it around with me), locked up, came home. The next set of books to review were waiting for me from my editor. I also have the next contest entries to start.

Since the prop worked in practical terms, I built enough of them to get us through the run. Unpacked and repacked the show bag; checked over the library bag so that I’m all set for today.

I’m going to do some client work for another hour or so, then head to the library for a few hours, then head for the Marine Life Center to do the show, then do some more client work when I get home tonight. Tomorrow and Friday and Saturday are pretty much the same schedule, plus I need to do the cooking late in the week to feed the actors between shows on Sunday.

Somehow, it will all work.

I have to admit, I’m looking forward to spending the first weekend of May in a hotel room. Whenever I’m not busy at the conference, I will be asleep in a king-sized bed!

Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day! Take some time to honor the our Big Blue Marble today, and find ways to care for and sustain our planet.

Worked flat out all day yesterday. I’m trying to wind up client projects, finalize the contract on the new project (because I am NOT working and delivering work without a contract and a deposit, so if they want to stick to the schedule discussed, they better stop dragging their heels and trying to backpedal on the agreed-upon terms), finish up the details for tomorrow’s opening of the show, prep next week’s workshop, etc. I wound up one of the contests — sending off the hard copies of the judging sheets, invoicing, packing up the entries to either keep or donate.

Had to run over to Falmouth to take care of something, and, on the way back, picked up most of the groceries I need to feed the actors between shows on Sunday (yes, I’m doing the cooking). Rehearsal with the understudy who will take over one of the roles in the show. It would have been a nice day for yard work, but there weren’t enough hours in the day.

Wrote two essays, one of which is up on A Biblio Paradise, as part of the new column “From the Stacks at Marstons Mills”, which will run on the fourth Tuesday of the month. As I’m learning the collection, I’m pulling and reading random titles that catch my eye and writing personal essays related to them. Researched the two articles on deadline. Worked on other client projects — one until nearly 11 PM — the graphics aren’t behaving; something in my program isn’t speaking to the jpg properly. It’s working with jpgs from other projects, just not these particular jpgs, so I’m not sure what the issue is.

Have a lot of work to do this morning on this front, before heading over to the Marine Life Center for our final dress/tech. Tomorrow, SEAL TIDES opens. Think comedy thoughts for us — faster, louder, funnier! 😉

Yesterday was an intense day all around the Boston area. Fortunately, the Marathon went smoothly, which I think is a huge step toward dealing with last year’s bombing. Joy and healing can begin to temper the pain and loss of the day.

The lives lost in the ferry accident in South Korea is tragic. Those poor parents. There are so many events that actually have meaning in the larger fabric that it’s harder to tolerate the petty crap so prevalent.

Hopefully, today will be a day that’s both productive and joyful.

Mon. April 21, 2014: Boston Marathon and Other Challenges

Patriots’ Day (celebrated), Boston Marathon Day

Today will be an intense day for people in this area. While last week was the actual anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, today is this year’s marathon, and, in the state of Massachusetts, a holiday.

Friday, I worked all day at the library (a good day), then headed to Buzzards Bay for rehearsal. Rehearsal went pretty well. We open in two days, so either it comes together or it doesn’t. At this point, it’s up to the actors. They get to run with it. I hope you will either come to support the show in person, or kick a couple of bucks toward it here.

Saturday, I sent a review to my editor, which means I’m ready for the next batch of books. I worked on client projects, I made my final choices on the first of the three contests I’m working on and sent them off, I turned around the final galleys on “Lake Justice”.

In the late afternoon, I had a rehearsal with the understudy for the show, and she was really, really good. She’s put in the work, and it shows.

Did some other work in the evening, but was exhausted.

Easter Sunday was tough, thanks to a client with no boundaries who is now trying to renege on the contract. If I need to walk away, that’s what I’ll do. Since I thought everything was settled and I was booked until the end of June, I’d stopped hustling for freelance projects, but just in case, I pitched for a few.

Tessa and I were out for a bit, but it was a little chilly out there; plus I’m not feeling well, and the last thing I need right now is to get sick — I have work, I have the show, I have a guest lecturing slot next week, the big gala at the library, the writers’ conference, winding up some client projects, the next contest entries, two magazine articles to write, and the release of “Lake Justice.”

Today, the focus is on client projects, the magazine articles, finishing up the program for the show, working on materials for the workshop I’m teaching, and understudy rehearsal.

It will be a busy two weeks and ass-hattery will not be tolerated.

Time to dig in.

I had a great day at the library yesterday. Really fun. Ran what needed to be run, made decisions that needed to be made, learned a bunch of new stuff, did some research, outsmarted the computer which tried to balk and not do what we needed it to do.

Came home, cooked dinner, worked on research for a project — and fell asleep. Woke up long enough to haul myself to bed and had a long, hard rest. Feel much better this morning.

Got some work done early on the script project and a client project. I plan to wrap up the next phase of the client project tomorrow. Later than I wanted, but the information is still trickling in, and it’s bumped up against other deadlines now, so I’m working around everything as best I can.

Also found the galleys of “Lake Justice” in my mailbox this morning — have to turn them around in the next two days.

I go directly from the library to rehearsal tonight. Tomorrow, I have client work, one more prop to build for the show, the “Lake Justice” galleys, storyboarding for the series, finishing up the course materials for the conference, rehearsal with the understudy, and I have to finalize the program for the show. I have a feeling there’s something else, too, but that’s what’s on my plate for tomorrow. I’m hoping I can have a much-needed day off for Easter Sunday, but that will depend on the galleys and the storyboarding for the series.

Thurs. April 17, 2014: Everything happens at once

Yesterday was a little overwhelming at the library — I still have a lot to learn, and don’t really know where to go for information. I’m asking lots of questions and relying a lot on those who are there. I’ll get there, but having these first days coincide with opening of the play AND the script job AND wrapping up client projects AND my own books starting to release is a lot.

By the end of the day, I felt better and more confident, thanks to help from the staff and former staff around me, but the morning was rough.

I went directly from the library to the marine life center. The new understudy started today — she’s going to have to step into one of the roles for the last performance. It was the first rehearsal for the full cast fully off book, but we soldiered through. And laughed a lot, which also helps. One more rehearsal, then tech, then the show.

Home, worked on client projects, and then had to turn around the next set of edits on the ghost story. Sent it off to my editor; this morning, she had a question –she found something which turned out to be a mistake on my part. That’s what I get for working when I’m so overtired. I’m very grateful to her for catching it. Also read the short stories for today’s short story group at the library.

Was up before 4 AM this morning, and working. Also set up a rehearsal over the weekend with the understudy.

Must eat and then head off to the library. Another full day — hopefully, I won’t be quite so much of a deer caught in the headlights today.

Yup. It’s snowing. Again.

Yesterday, I was up by 5:30 (which will be the norm for the coming weeks). Did some client work and other work and correspondence that had to go out. By 8:30, I was on the road for errands, thinking they would take until 10 or 10:30.

They took until nearly 3. No one’s fault, just everything took longer than expected. But it got done, and it means I don’t have to worry about errands for the rest of the week.

That put me behind on everything else, but I did some work on client projects, the storyboard for the script job, and interviewed potential stage managers/understudies. Worked on the next book that’s going to be reviewed and went over information sent to me about the upcoming days at the library. Worked on designing the prop I still have to build.

Woke up at 4:30 this morning, after weird theatre dreams. Yoga, meditation, the usual morning routine.

Got some work done this morning re: the play, the script job, and preparation for the day at the library. The car is packed for all the different tasks that need to be completed. Could not believe it is snowing again — glad I pulled in the plants last night.

The next round of edits on “Lake Justice” landed in my inbox this morning, so I’ll have to figure those in to the schedule over the next few days, too.

Going straight from a full day at the library today to rehearsal, and then back home to work on edits and client projects.

Busy day. Good busy, but I have to focus on the task at hand, and not get distracted by other demands.

Tues. April 15, 2014: The Life of 5:30 AM – Midnight

Tax day and the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. Rain is appropriate.

Busy day. It was hard not to hustle for jobs — that’s become such a reflexive part of my day. But I really can’t take anything new on until late June, so anything that’s quick turnaround just can’t fit in.

Caught up on some stuff for the library, worked on client projects, wrote a review, wrote an article going live later this week, got the contest entries for the next contest, checked them in, read the series bible for the scripting job, took notes, had a meeting on that job, interviewed potential stage managers, worked on a prop I need to be able to put onto another prop and remove after each show. Still not where I want it. Took care of some correspondence. Hunted down a couple of stories I have to read for Thursday’s short story group. Got my instructions for Thursday, when I’m in charge — a little intimidating, but I plan to step up.

Today, I need to finish a draft of a client project, run some errands in Falmouth and Sandwich (preferably before the torrential rain begins), get some groceries and cat food into the house, continue the search for a stage manager, research my two articles due at the end of the month, finish another book for review, read two short stories for an event at the library on Thursday, and work on the storyboard for the scriptwriting job.

In other words — I better get going!

Mon. April 14, 2014: Cover Reveal, Play Information, and Tight Organizational Skills

Busy, busy weekend.

Friday, I was back at the new job at the library, learning new stuff. Learned how to check in books, do the holds, pull from the shelves for requests, etc., etc. Went over some of the ordering protocols. Got my professional email set up, and dived into the administrative part. Learning how to make spines and add bar codes and make records as new books, CDs, and videos come in and go on the shelf. Getting an idea of the current programs, since new programs for adults will be my jurisdiction moving forward. Lots to learn, but I’m eager to learn it all. My co-workers are lovely, and eager to help me settle in.

It was pleasant enough to eat lunch outside — something I hope to do on most nice days there.

Came home, checked email and discovered that I landed an educational scriptwriting job I really, really wanted. Fifteen episodes by the end of June. I’m looking forward to it — I had a blast with the paid test episode, so I’m eager to get to work on the project as a whole.

Packed up the car and headed for rehearsal. Loaded in the newly edited slides for the play (we’re using some of the real slides from the presentation in the play). I had one actor out sick and one not feeling well but there, so we worked as much as we could, and spent time on certain bits of business and tech. I had someone to sit on book, so I could actually concentrate on directing, for once.

Started the next book sent for review. The next contest entries are scheduled to arrive today.

Saturday morning, it was nice enough to get some yard work done.

I had a client meeting in the early afternoon about the new scriptwriting job, and they sent me more materials, with even more this morning in preparation for this afternoon’s meeting.

Worked on taxes and the new book for review after that.

Sunday, I had a slow, leisurely start out on the deck to the morning, went over some research materials that need to be returned, did some work marketing the play, and then finished up the taxes. They’re ready to go.

I also finished the first round of edits on “Lake Justice” and got them back to my editor.

I did some work on my materials for the workshop I’m teaching at NECRWA in two weeks, and prepared some notes for my lecture at the Community College earlier that week.

I have letters to write today, and quite a bit of material to go over before this afternoon’s client meeting. I also need to wind up two client projects today and tomorrow and get out some requested samples. Then, I’m not taking on any new freelance projects until early July, although I’ll still be pitching regularly in May, and ramping it up in June.

I posted on Facebook that I will be working a minimum of 18 hours per day, seven days a week, between now and May 8. That is not an exaggeration. I am grateful, and these are opportunities that could not be shifted and would not come again. I’m not going to whine about the time put in or how tired I’ll be. I know I’ll be both exhausted, and I’ll have to be very, very organized. However, anyone who whines AT me about how busy THEY are will be stabbed in the eye with a fork. A monogrammed one. Because let’s face it, those who WHINE about being busy aren’t actually busy — they waste a lot of time. Those of us who ARE keeping busy schedules during the feast cycle are way too busy getting things done to whine! For the next three weeks, I have an even more zero tolerance policy on whining than I usually do.
