A Dark and Stormy Morning Outside, Glowing With Happiness Inside

Yesterday, I signed a lease.

On a lovely house on Cape Cod, the area in which I’ve wanted to live for years. In addition to a gorgeous kitchen, living area, bedroom and tons of storage, I have a bright, sunny room that will be my writing room, a fireplace, a covered deck and lovely yard with trees — some of them oak, which are one of my favorites, and even a stillroom for my herbs. There’s even an entire room of closets over the garage, with built-in shelving specifically for books. And a garage.

The owners are lovely, lovely people. They’re very eco-conscious, and the house reflects the best of that, and he’s in construction and has done a lot of the work himself. He’s teaching me how to do stuff like mow the lawn properly and handle things like the furnace filters, etc.

It has an amazing refrigerator, a gas stove, and a dishwasher. I haven’t had a dishwasher in years. It has a washer and dryer. The only appliance I have to buy is a lawn mower. Since leaf blowers turn me into a homicidal maniac, I am buying a big rake and some bags and raking!

There are only six houses on my tiny lane, and yet it’s close enough to a main road with major shopping that, if I wanted to, I could walk. It’s also close to Rt. 132 and all the major shops in Hyannis like Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods and Petsmart and all that — about ten minute drive in winter, more in summer. It’s less than ten minutes from the beach, and, up the road is a lovely lake with a name I can’t yet pronounce.

It still feels a little unreal, but I am so happy and so relieved, and we start hauling carloads of stuff up on Monday, while I get the truck sorted.

I still have a huge fight on my hands with the current (string of expletives deleted) landlords, but once we are gone, they can’t physically come in and hurt us any more, and I will have a lawyer handle the rest.

I’m giving my official notice on the first of the month, which is also when I’ll let neighbors, etc. know. I’m letting other friends and colleagues know, and it’s nice that everyone is so happy for us.

So now you all have to come visit!

I’ll be posting pictures as we go through this process, so you can see how the rooms evolve. The family in Maine is thrilled, both because they knew we needed to get out of here, and because now we’re closer and can get to see each other more.

I’d love to collapse and go to sleep for about a week, but now I have to rev up. This morning, I have to correct exercises for both workshops — I commented on Thursday’s last night when I got home, but I have to backtrack and read the earlier ones that went up late. I have to finish packing for this weekend’s gig. I have to pick up my new glasses — they told us it would take a little over a week and did them in four days — love these people! My friend scored a bunch of boxes at work, so I have to go pick them up. And I have to be at my first gig of the weekend by noon. I’m bouncing between two site gigs this weekend, and winding up the workshops, AND I have two books to read and review for different gigs.

And all I want to do is pack!

Thank you so much for all your support, prayers, well-wishes. Really, it helped me get through this.

Photos soon, I promise!

  1. Whoo-hoo! Is that my good news?! I should have put that order in MONTHS ago. 😀 Absolutely thrilled and delighted for you. Will the cats be able to go out?

    • The cats must strictly remain indoor cats — coyotes and fishers to worry about. However, in summer, I will put them in harnesses and take them on the deck.

    • Ooh ooh – and will you be in to give thanks there on Thanksgiving?

      I’m so excited for you.

      I had to Google fishers … :/

  2. Happy Dance! Happy Dance!! Today sounds busy, but it will be much brighter for you!

  11. I’m another of those people who you don’t know, but I’ve been following your blog for the last few months after googling ‘writers blogs’.
Yours is one of the few which is entertaining and interesting and which I read religiously. I am absolutely ecstatic that you have found a new home, one which sounds like an absolute dream. Best of luck in the new home and remember what goes around, comes around – the landlord will eventually get bitten by the karma bug.

  12. Congratulations!! I’m so happy for you.

  13. I’ve been reading your blog for years, maybe six? and you’ve had so much crap to deal with in your housing situation. I am so happy you found a lovely home!!!

  14. This website was… how do I say it? Relevant!! Finally I have found something that helped me.
    Many thanks!
