Devon,
In regards to giving admonishments for cell phones...I came up with a good pithy way to make that announcement.

I used it once when I read a paper by proxy at a symposium and when someone's phone did go off, she was incredibly embarrassed and the audience applauded when she left.

Here it is:

"Before I begin, I'd like to remind everyone to turn their cell phones off or switch to vibrate. That is unless you are on the organ transplant waiting list and you feel like today might be your lucky day. In that case, of course, we'll all be pulling for you."

So when the phone rang, I looked at the woman and said, "The surgical team is standing by. Good luck!" and gave her the thumbs up.

Her face turned beet red, and she slinked out of the room.

BTW, I've been meaning to post about the whole melamine contamination thang. It's not just pet food anymore. It's going to be (if it isn't already) in our whole blasted food supply.

The race to the bottom is in price is also the race to the bottom in quality, integrity, and will lead to our utter destruction as a species. This angers me on so many levels, it is hard to know where to begin.

Sounds like a wonderful trip and the conference must have been awesome! Sorry about your toes though. It's a bitch when you can't walk without pain.

I don't know how you stay so darned skinny with all the tasty food you eat!

I think there's a reason that most artists are the black sheep.

We are special, because we know we are different.

And, we know we have something special, which means we do not HAVE to join the world!

truly,

I'm glad that things went well with your grandmother. It's hard to see them aging before our eyes.

Wow. You have been through so much.
That writer's conference sounds absolutely wonderful! That's great that you got to go.
Sympathy on the broken toe -ouch!
And I know what you mean about your grandmother - it is so, so hard to see the people you are close to aging.
Good for you for sticking to your guns on your life - in the end, you're the one who has to live it, and if you let your grandmother make your choices you would end up resenting her. I've seen that happen more times than I can count.
And I like your story idea about the metro - that would be a riot!

Whew! Reading your acounts of the last few days, I wonder where you get the energy. I'm glad your visit with your Grandmother went well. I say that even though I know it must be tough to see her aging and to also put up with someone elses beliefs about YOU.
I'm sorry to hear about your toe, I've broken mine so many times it's not funny. Keep taking care of it!
I' also glad to hear you had a wonderful time at PEN. I hope it's just what you need to recharge!

Darn. Should have written that better. I meant to say when I left my grandmother's house this last time after visiting for Easter, not left it permanently!
